Historic Waterloo

Name: Schiel-Patterson House
Address: 115 William Street West
Year Built: 1898
Architectural Styles: Queen Anne
Heritage Status: Designated (Part IV)
Builder: Charles Kreutziger

In 1898, Martin Schiel, who worked at the Kaufman Rubber Company in Berlin (now Kitchener), purchased this lot from his father-in-law, Jacob Oetzel, and planned a new home. He signed a contract with local builder Charles Kreutziger, which specified that "the house is to be like the Mitchell's in Berlin" and "the front window is to be similar to the one in Mrs. Martin's home". This house is a 1¾-storey house of buff-brick veneer built in the Queen Anne style. There is elaborate, oversized wood trim along the multi-sloped roof line that highlights the roof's irregularity. The Romanesque windows, which vary in size, shape, and location, augment the house's asymmetrical appearance. This house is a mirror image of the one at 105 William Street West.
