Historic Waterloo

Name: Grand Trunk Railway Station (former)
Address: 20 Regina Street South
Year Built: 1910, addition 2013
Architectural Styles: Romanesque Revival
Heritage Status: Designated (Part IV)

This building was built by the Grand Trunk Railway in 1910 to replace an earlier wooden structure. It was built using a standard Grand Trunk plan for a second-class station. It has a sweeping, hipped roof with flared eaves. Doors and windows feature elliptical fanlights in flattened arches. The western side of the building, closest to Regina Street, was used for passenger service, and the eastern side for freight. The Grand Trunk Railway became part of Canadian National Railways in 1917, and in 1935, with automobiles, buses, and the like becoming more common, CNR ended passenger service to Waterloo. Freight service to the station continued until 1949. The station building was then used for storage for over 40 years. In the 1990s, the City of Waterloo rehabilitated the building; today it is a menswear store.
