Historic Waterloo

Name: Hamel-Elsworthy-Elgie House
Address: 88 Fountain Street
Year Built: 1906
Architectural Styles: Queen Anne
Heritage Status: Designated (Part IV)

Designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, in which documents it is referred to as the Hamel-Elsworthy-Elgie house, this house was never actually owned by the Hamel family. Sophia Hamel sold John Hahn the house that is now 29–31 Central Street in 1904, and in 1906 Hahn built this house in what would have been that house's back yard. Like the Schiel-Patterson house on William Street West, erected eight years before, it is a 1¾-storey structure of buff brick construction on a rubble stone foundation, built in the Queen Anne style. The house has a projecting rectangular bay, a roof with some variability in its lines, and typical Queen Anne decorative details, including the roof supports for the verandah, delicate spindles, and woodwork. Within each gable peak is a decorative arch with applied scrollwork, spindles and circular piercing.
