Hilliard House, 88 William Street West

This two-storey buff brick Italianate house was built in 1880 for Thomas Hilliard, a well-known Waterloo citizen, who at various times was editor of the Waterloo Chronicle, town councillor and mayor of Waterloo, a founder of Dominion Life Assurance Company and, from 1905 to 1929, its president, and a founder of Waterloo Trust and Savings Company. The house's hip roof, brackets under the eaves, wrap-around verandah, and stained glass windows are of note. The house was designated under the Ontario Heritage Act on July 23, 1979. It sits on a lot nearly an acre in size.
