Historic Waterloo

Name: Kuntz-Eckert House
Address: 156 King Street South
Year Built: 1880
Architectural Styles: Italianate
Heritage Status: Designated (Part IV)

The Kuntz-Eckert house was built by the Kuntz family, who owned the Spring Brewery across the street, in 1880. It was originally one of three similar houses facing the square; the exterior façade of this house has been little changed from what it would have originally been, while 160 King Street South has been modified somewhat and 164 King Street South has been demolished for a parking lot. This house was in the possession of the Eckert family from 1898 until the late 1970s. The Kuntz-Eckert house is a good example of a merchant's home in the second half of the nineteenth century. The two-storey structure is designed in the Italianate style and is of buff brick. A two-storey projecting bay with segmentally arched windows dominates the façade. The main entrance is enhanced by side-lights with a blind transom; perhaps the latter is an early replacement for the glass which would be expected. Much of the original detailing of the porch has been retained. There are brackets under the eaves.
