Historic Waterloo

Name: Good-Shantz-Bosch House
Address: 157 Albert Street
Year Built: 1846, addition 1896
Architectural Styles: Georgian, Italianate
Heritage Status: Designated (Part IV)

A mid-nineteenth Georgian frame house built by Joseph Good in 1846, the house was modified substantially around 1896 by Allen Shantz to give it its current late-Victorian appearance. However, the house has retained parts of the original structure in which Joseph Good's doors, floors and exterior can still be seen. From the earliest period moulded trim, shutters, eared window pediments, a blind attic window, as well as return eaves on the front gable, also still exist. The extensive renovations by Shantz, intended to enhance the building's appearance, altered the entrance and added the semi-circular verandah with its newel posts topped by cannon ball finials. The roofline was also changed and a stained-glass parlour window was added.
