The Mutual Life Assurance Company of Canada's head office was opened in 1912, with several subsequent additions. The 1912 building was designed by architectural firm Darling & Pearson of Toronto in a Modern Renaissance style. The building shows significant attention to detail; note, for instance, the columns and stone carvings. It was erected at a cost of $235,000. When the new office opened in 1912, manager George Wegenast said regarding it, "Gentlemen, we will never fill it." Only nine years later, in 1921, the first of seven additions was made to the building. This addition, along Union Street, is consistent with the original architectural style.
