Historic Waterloo

Name: "Backwards House"
Address: 251 Mary Street
Year Built: 1889
Architectural Styles: Queen Anne

Known as the "Backwards House", this red brick house was built facing King Street in 1889 for Frederick Colquhoun. When Colquhoun died in 1906, the property was sold to H. E. Ratz. In 1925 the land around the house was sold to developer Lincoln Stroh, who built houses in front of it on King Street. The result was that the only portion of the house facing a street was the back of the house, which faces Mary Street. The ceilings on the first floor are 10 feet high, 11 feet high on the second floor and 12 feet high in the attic.
