Historic Waterloo

Name: Burkholder-Burkhardt House
Address: 7 Central Street
Year Built: 1849
Architectural Styles: Gothic Revival
Heritage Status: Designated (Part IV)
Builder: Samuel Burkholder

On March 2, 1849, Samuel Burkholder purchased land at this location and began constructing a building. He did not reveal for what purpose he was building, but, once the walls were finished, Burkholder proposed to Waterloo's Evangelical Association that if they would finish the building, he would grant them free use of it for their services. They agreed and furnished the building with items such as benches and a pulpit. The church met here for over 20 years, until they built a church on Cedar Street (now Bridgeport Road) at the current location of Emmanuel United Church. The house has been altered throughout the years. The front gable was a later addition, and closed-up doors and windows are revealed by changes in brick pattern. Of note are the barge board, finial, return eaves, the tiny windows in the attic and the S-shaped tie rod end.
