Historic Waterloo

Name: Market Hotel
Address: 12 Dupont Street West
Year Built: ca. 1869, addition ca. 1874, 1923
Heritage Status: Designated (Part IV)

This building was built as the Albert Hotel in the 1860s. It was expanded along Duke (now Dupont) Street around 1874 by Christian Letter and was renamed the Market Hotel. Centrally located, business was good at the hotel, until prohibition in 1916 caused the hotel's demise. In 1917 the building was sold to the John Forsyth Shirt Company, who re-opened it as a shirt factory in 1919. An addition along Duke Street was added in 1923. There is a later addition along Water (now Dorset) Street. The factory closed in 1991.
