Historic Waterloo

Name: Martin Meeting House
Address: 660 King Street North
Year Built: 1848, addition 1900
Architectural Styles: Mennonite Georgian
Heritage Status: Listed

Last remaining early Mennonite Church in Waterloo. In 1824, Henry Martin set aside four acres for a meeting house and cemetery. In 1848, the land was purchased by the Mennonite Society of British North America and a meeting house was built. With the expansion of the city of Waterloo, the Old Order Mennonites stopped using the building at the end of 1993 due to King Street having become too dangerous for horse-drawn vehicles. The building is still used by Markham Mennonites, who drive black cars.
